- About The Homosassa Florida Area - "The Nature Coast" The Homosassa Florida Area has an abundance of things to do and a little bit of everything to fit all tastes in life. The closest and most famous is the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park which is located near Homosassa Springs, Florida in the United States. The park is one of the best places in the state to view Manatee. Black Bears, Bobcats, White Tailed Deer, American Alligator, and River Otters can also been seen in the park. Injured manatee are treated at the park before being released into the wild. Many of the species commonly viewed by visitors are extremely rare. More than a dozen threatened or endangered species of animals inhabit Homosassa, including the American bald eagle. The most famous "endangered" animal which considers the area home is the West Indian Manatee. So common is the manatee in these waters, it is difficult for our visitors not to see one. At the Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park, less than 1 mile from the Riverside Resort, visitors can observe the manatee from a room submerged beneath the surface of the Homosassa Springs Visitors can get close to the animals via this floating observatory. If you own or rent a boat (boat rentals are available from many wonderful places along the Homosassa River) daily sightings of Manatee and Dolphin in the wild are almost guaranteed. Another must see right on the Homosassa River is Monkey Island which sits in front of the Riverside Resort Restaurant and Hotel. This restaurant has seating in which to watch the antics of the monkeys while you are sampling some of their food of which the Blue Claw Crab is their specialty. Additionally, the Homosassa River is known throughout the United States and in the fishing world as one of the best fishing rivers in the entire United States. If this isn't your cup of tea, then perhaps a trip around the area to one or a few of the many antique shops in the area. Or on the weekends you can check out Howard's Flea Market near the intersection of US 19 and Cardinal Street. Additionally, there are festivals ongoing throughout the year be it the Homosassa Seafood Festival, The Crystal River Manatee Festival, the many Arts and Craft Festivals in both cities, The Homosassa River Raft Race, The Homosassa Christmas Boat Parade, The Fourth of July Fireworks on the River etc. As you can see, the list goes on and on. The great part is that most of these things take place almost right in your own back yard. Most of these events can be either viewed at home, or viewed after a short walk or ride to the front of the subdivision and over to the Riverhaven Marina right on the banks of the river.
